Mosquito Control Continues to Protect Public Health During Coronavirus Outbreak

The Cowlitz County Mosquito Control District is committed to protecting public health. The District is taking proactive steps in order to protect staff and residents to help slow the spread of COVID-19. However, the current preventative measures to contain the spread of coronavirus will not hinder performance of essential mosquito control activities in Cowlitz County.  The District will continue to provide essential Mosquito Control service such as mosquito inspections, surveillance and control to prevent mosquito transmitted diseases. Mosquito bites can not transmit COVID-19 however they can transmit several other diseases including West Nile Virus.  Despite the emphasis on COVID-19, we can’t lose sight of the fact that other debilitating and potentially fatal diseases transmitted by mosquitoes may also potentially infect our citizens.

While organized mosquito control activities are vital to reducing human-mosquito contact, don’t forget the importance of public action. The general public can make substantial contributions to their own safety by following “the 3 D’s”:

•             Drain:    Empty out water containers at least once per week

•             Dress:  Wear long sleeves, long pants, and light-colored, loose-fitting clothing

•             Defend:  Properly apply an approved repellent such as DEET, picaridin, IR3535, oil of lemon-eucalyptus or any other EPA-registered repellent.

We will continue to monitor, assess and adjust our operations as conditions change. We encourage you to follow the CDC and your local public health department guidelines about slowing the spread of COVID-19.

Cowlitz County Mosquito Control Board Meeting Dates for 2020

The Cowlitz County Mosquito Control Board will meet on the following dates for 2020.

Tuesday, April 14, 2020 6:00 p.m.
Tuesday, June 16, 2020 6:00 p.m.
Tuesday, September 8, 2020 (set preliminary budget for 2021) 6:00 p.m.                 
Tuesday, October 13, 2020 (Public Hearing) 6:00 p.m.

Public Notice of Mosquito Control Activities

The Cowlitz County Mosquito Control District will begin seasonal activities soon.

Only when mosquito larva is found will they use one of the following larvicides.

  1. VectoBac EPA# 73049-10 and 73049-38 (Bacillus thuringiensis, subspecies Israelensis): specific for mosquito larva
  2. Vectolex FG EPA# 73049-20 (Bacillus sphaericus): specific for mosquito larva
  3. Vectomax FG EPA# 73049-429 (Bacillus thuringiensis, subspecies Israelensis and Bacillus sphaericus): specific for mosquito larva
  4. Vectoprime FG EPA# 73049-501 (Bacillus thuringiensis, subspecies Israelensis and S-Methoprene): specific for mosquito larva
  5. Natular EPA# 8329-84 and 8329-83 (Spinosad): the first mosquito larvicide evaluated as a Reduced Risk Product by the EPA
  6. Altosid EPA# 2724-421 and 2724-448 (S-Methoprene) a growth inhibitor active on mosquito larva
  7. Cocobear Oil EPA# 8329-93 (mineral oil): for late stage larva and pupa on impounded water bodies

Later in the season and only in areas where adult mosquitoes cause extreme annoyance or mosquito transmitted disease is present will the district adulticide using:

  • Permanone EPA# 432-1277 (Permethrin) which is Ultra Low Volume sprayed at a rate between 0.024 and 0.112 ounces per acre.

Mosquito control activities will continue throughout the season until mid-October.

Public Notice

The Cowlitz County Mosquito Control District Board of Trustees, sitting as a Board of Equalization, will consider the assessments of persons owning property within the District at a public hearing to be held on October 8, 2019. All tax parcels of one (1) acre or less shall be assessed approximately $4.55.  Larger parcels shall be assessed at a rate reflective of their size. In addition, tax parcels situated within certain areas of the District shall be assessed a fifty percent (50%) surcharge. The rates applicable to larger parcels and the areas subject to surcharge are more particularly described on the District’s website: https://cowlitzmosquitocontrol.org/how-to-calculate-your-assessment/ .  For information regarding the approximate assessments to be imposed upon any benefited property, call Trevor Schneider, District Manager, at 360-423-5311, or information can be obtained at the hearing location immediately preceding the hearing.

All persons who may desire to object to their assessment may make such objections in writing by filing the same with Trevor Schneider, Program Manager, Cowlitz Co. Mosquito Control District, PO Box 1261, Longview, WA 98632 prior to the date fixed for hearing. Objections can also be raised at the public hearing in person.

California Way

Kalama River Road

Kalama River Road. Begin at 107 Kalama River Road; continue east to 461 Kalama River Road (Parcel 60893). All lots between these two addresses accessed by Kalama River Road.

Mint Farm

Begin at Olive Way and Ocean Beach Hwy. Olive Way to Memorial Park Drive. Memorial Park Drive West to 38th Ave. South on 38th Ave to Industrial Way.  Industrial Way southwest to Washington Way. Washington Way east to Rail Road tracks crossing Washington Way (just west of 34th Ave). Rail line north to Ocean Beach Hwy. Ocean Beach Hwy. to Olive Way.

South Kelso
